Why Dunskey?

Two Thousand Acres.
Three Nights.
One Invitation.

It Started With A Gathering

When our family arrived at Dunskey in 2015, two adults, two children, and the particular kind of hope that makes people take on enormous, impractical things, we tried, at first, to simply live here. And it was home. It is.

But there is something about this place that resists being kept private. The land, the light, the particular quality of the silence. So in 2016, we opened Dunskey to the world.

For ten summers, we held something called The Gathering. People given three nights on a coastal estate with nowhere else to be.

What we saw was transformation. Not the grand, cinematic kind. The subtle, irreversible kind.

CONNECTION, WHEN GIVEN THE RIGHT CONDITIONS,
GOES SOMEWHERE IT CANNOT OTHERWISE REACH.

That is why we opened Dunskey.

That is what every event here is built around.

Everything on this page exists to show you what those conditions actually look like.

The Place

Wild Beauty This Private Is Almost Unheard Of

There is a reason people stand at the edge of the cliff and go quiet.

A reason they come back from the morning walk looking slightly altered.

This land does something to the body, to the mind, to the self that spends most of its life indoors.

We do not fully understand it either. We have just learned to trust it.

Coastlines. Beaches. Sea lochs. Ancient woodlands.

A walled garden that grows things improbably tropical in the Scottish air.

A glen.

Meadows that seem to continue until the light changes its mind.

Two thousand acres of it, and every last foot of it entirely, completely, privately yours.

The Place

  1. 2,000acres of private coastal estate
  2. 90guests across castle and 12 lodges
  3. 25events per year, never more
No strangers. No noise. Just the land, and your people inside it.

The Promise

Exclusively Yours

When your team, your wedding party, or your family is at Dunskey, you are the only people here.

The castle, the lodges, the grounds, the coastline, the team. All of it.

No shared spaces. No other groups. No compromises.

We take twenty-five events a year.

That is not a limitation.

That is a choice we make every time we could choose otherwise, because your celebration deserves our whole attention.

The rest of our time is preparation: the kind that cannot be rushed, that has no shortcut, that shows up on the day as an atmosphere you can feel but not quite name.

The Conviction

Three Nights. Not A Policy.

Every event at Dunskey requires a minimum of three nights. We are clear-eyed about why.

One night is a visit. Two nights is a holiday. Three nights is where something real has a chance of happening. Where people stop performing the occasion and begin, quietly, to inhabit each other’s lives again.

We have watched this pattern for a decade. The first evening, people arrive carrying whatever they carried in: work stress, travel fatigue, the low hum of everything waiting at home.

The second day, something shifts. People exhale. Conversations get longer. Eye contact gets steadier.

The third day is where the real things happen: the walk nobody planned, the conversation at the long table that both parties will carry for years.

We would rather turn away bookings that want less than deliver an experience we know will be incomplete.

THE CARE

Everything, thought of.
Including the things you forgot.

Our team knows the ingredient in every dish. Who is allergic to shellfish. What flowers are on which table, and why those flowers. What time your grandmother needs the quiet room before the dancing starts. Which cousin is leaving at dawn for Glasgow and needs a bag lunch, not a goodbye.

Catering, production, AV, photography, activities, coordination. All in-house. One team, one point of contact, one invoice. You make the decisions. We hold everything else.

The seamlessness you will feel is not magic. It is the product of a team that has been thinking about your event the way you think about someone you love: carefully, and without being asked.

There are no packages. There is no template. No event at Dunskey has ever looked like another, because no two groups of people have ever been the same.

THE TABLE

This is not food.
This is where it happens.

Every menu at Dunskey is composed specifically for you. Not selected from a list. Composed. Based on your history, your preferences, what has delighted you, what you cannot stand, what you have not tasted since childhood and did not think to mention.

We work almost entirely with small-batch Scottish producers. Our meat comes predominantly from Dunskey’s own farm, a short walk from where you will eat it. Our four chefs, two of whom are Michelin-decorated, are devoted, for the duration of your stay, to no one but you.

But the food is only half the story. The other half is where it happens.

The Table

Afternoon tea in the walled garden, with bees moving through the lavender.
A surprise hot picnic at the lighthouse, on a beach that most people never find.
A feast around a roaring fire in the woodland, the kind of meal that feels slightly ancient, slightly sacred.
A candlelit dinner in the Edwardian dining room, hundreds of flickering flames, the smell of old stone.

You will not remember the food. You will remember where you were when you ate it, and who was across the table.

THE DAYS

Boredom would have to work very hard to find you here.

Hiking trails that keep revealing more. Wild swimming in water cold enough to make you gasp, then a wood-fired sauna to return to your body.

Fishing. Forest bathing. Yoga at a time that suits you. Watercolour painting. Clay pigeon shooting. Archery. A botanical walk. Ceilidh dancing at a volume that shakes the walls.

Gin and whisky tasting. Golf. A scavenger hunt that grown adults have become surprisingly competitive about. The Dunskey Olympics. Tribal drums around a bonfire.

And then, for those who know, the rave cave.

We coordinate and produce every last thing. You arrive and you are, simply, present. That is the only thing we ask.

THE JOURNEY

The remoteness is not an obstacle.

Portpatrick sits on the south-west coast of Scotland, where the land ends and the Atlantic begins.

It is not in the middle of nowhere. It is at the end of a two-hour drive from Glasgow, on a cliff overlooking the Irish Sea. Most of our guests say the drive is the first part of the experience.

The Journey

  1. 2 hrsfrom Glasgow by car
  2. 2.5 hrsfrom Edinburgh by car
  3. 90 minsfrom Prestwick Airport by car
From London: 1-hour flight to Prestwick, plus 90-minute transfer.

For groups, we coordinate coach transfers from Glasgow or Edinburgh.

For weddings and celebrations, we provide detailed travel guidance for every guest and arrange private transfers.

The landscape changes as you come south, and most people arrive already feeling different.

THE EXPERIENCE

A Corporate Retreat

Day 1, afternoon.

Your team arrives.

Coach transfers from Glasgow or Edinburgh if needed. Lodge check-in across the estate, time to walk the grounds, find the sea, get the measure of the place.

An informal welcome supper in the castle dining room, long tables, the food already doing its quiet work of disarming people. Dunskey Freda game takes place after dinner in the library for the most energetic icebreaker game you’ll ever imagine!

Day 2.

Morning working session in the Drawing Room or the Library, set exactly as you briefed it.

Afternoon, the schedule opens: archery, foraging, wild swimming, a ranger-led hike along the cliffs. People self-select. The conversations that happen during these hours are usually the ones that matter most.

Evening: a fine dining experience that has been built with your team’s energy and preferences in mind. Afterhours, a ceilidh band or even the rave cave to dial up that one-of-a-kind Scottish-infused spirit. The kind of night people will still be talking about at the all-hands three months later.

Day 3.

A slower morning. Final session, looser, because the group has changed overnight. Afternoon free on the estate, or a group activity: the Dunskey Olympics, clay pigeon shooting, whisky tasting. Gather at the beach for bonfire, hot drinks and archery before entering the Fire Feast at the secret woodland cathedral. A wild dining experience so spectacular and unique it silences the group! This is the evening of the third-night conversation.

Day 4, morning.

Breakfast. The kind of goodbye that takes longer than planned.

A Wedding Weekend

Friday.

Guests arrive through the afternoon. Lodge check-in, the estate team on hand to guide people in. Welcome drinks in the walled garden. An informal supper, the rehearsal-dinner energy of everyone being in one place for the first time. The rave cave opens late for those who want it.

Saturday.

The ceremony. Clifftop above the Atlantic, or the loch, or the walled garden, or the Great Hall, or any of the twelve locations you have chosen. The reception moves through the estate: drinks in the gardens, dinner in the Edwardian dining room lit by hundreds of candles, dancing until the walls shake. Your four chefs have composed this meal for you alone.

Sunday.

A slow brunch. Nobody is in a rush. An estate walk for those who want it, or nothing at all. The Fire Feast, of course, takes place on the third day, when folks gather around the flames in the woods. This is usually the part people remember most: the morning after, still together, still slightly undone, not yet back in the world.

Monday.

Please add departure. The team gathers on the terrace to bid farewell. Fully expect tears!

A Celebration Weekend

Friday.

The family arrives in waves. Children immediately finding each other, grandparents settling in. A casual dinner in the castle, the kind where nobody sits in their assigned place for long.

Saturday.

A morning that scatters on purpose. The teenagers find the archery. The grandparents take the botanical walk. A group heads to the beach. The children do a scavenger hunt across the estate and become ferociously competitive. Evening: the celebration dinner. Ceilidh dancing afterward, or tribal drums around the bonfire, or the rave cave for the brave.

Sunday.

Brunch. Then a group activity such as the Dunskey Olympics: caber tossing, tug of war, crates stacking, archery, ax throwing. Or the famous Dunskey scavenger hunt in teams. Then gather at the beach and the Fire Feast as above.

Monday.

The last walk. The cousin’s bag lunch. The goodbye that takes longer than anyone expected. The drive home where everyone is quieter than usual, not because they are tired, but because they are carrying something they did not have when they arrived.

THE INVESTMENT

We would rather you know.

Every event at Dunskey is different, and the final investment reflects what you build with us.

But we would rather you know the shape of it upfront than wonder.

Dunskey is all-inclusive.

Your investment covers exclusive use of the estate, all meals, beverages, accommodation, activities, in-house production, photography, and coordination.

There are no hidden fees. What we quote is what it costs.

Events and celebrations
Per guest, per day, based on group size:

20 guests    from £680
40 guests    from £620
50 guests    from £590
75 guests    from £550
90 guests    from £530

Weddings
Most couples invite guests to contribute towards the stay, typically at £300 per guest per day.

With guest contributions, the couple’s investment is:

20 guests    from £23,000
40 guests    from £38,000
50 guests    from £44,000
75 guests    from £56,000
90 guests    from £62,000

These are starting points. Every event is different, and we build a detailed proposal once we understand what you need.

But we believe you should know the range before you pick up the phone.

YOUR QUESTIONS

What we hear most.

No. Our team manages the full production of your event, from the first planning conversation through to the final morning. One team, one point of contact, from start to finish. If you already have a planner you love, they are welcome, but you will not need one.

THE TRUTH

We are not trying to sell you an event.

When we opened Dunskey, we made a choice that confused some people. We could have built something more conventional, more scalable. Instead we built something that reflects what we actually believe: that the greatest gift you can give the people you love is the conditions to genuinely find each other again.

That belief shapes every decision, including the ones that might give you pause. The minimum stay. The all-inclusive model. The twenty-five events a year. None of it is arbitrary. All of it is love, expressed as logistics.

THE DIFFERENCE

When you come to Dunskey, you will be cared for in a way that is difficult to describe before you have felt it.

We will know your guests before they arrive.

Not just their dietary requirements, but who they are, what they carry, what they need. We will anticipate things you did not think to ask for.

We will go further than you expect, not because a contract requires it, but because we are genuinely, constitutionally incapable of doing otherwise.

The things our team does when nobody is keeping score:

Head chef Dave once ran around the whole of Stranraer at 7 am to buy Pedialyte for guests who fell ill before breakfast.
One of our housekeepers sat for hours in the emergency room with a guest who was taken ill.
Our barman brought his entire wardrobe to work because a guest’s luggage went missing.
Our head housekeeper comforted a guest who had recently lost a child, because she had lived through the same thing decades ago.

There is no performance of hospitality here. There is only the real thing, which is quieter, less showy, and far more sustaining than the performance.

We have built our lives around the belief that human connection is the most important thing.
Dunskey is our answer to the question of what the conditions for that connection look like.

If that is what you are looking for, please call. We would love to have you.
